Vacations Home Travel clean air sunsets views of ski slopes If you're going up
during holiday traffic, we highly recommend driving up the back route, through
San Bernardino.
From Big Bear Blvd., turn up the hill on Fox Farm, left on Starvation Flats,
right on Juniper. The house is on a corner lot, one block up on the far right
side. Check-in time is 3pm. Check-out time is 11am. These times may be flexible,
depending on whether other visitors are coming and going, and what the
housekeeper's schedule is. However, if we do have the cabin booked for other
visitors the day you are leaving, it's so important that you vacate by 11am so
the housekeeper can get the house turned around for the next guests. The door
code is currently set to: Just key in these 4 digits and push the key symbol in
the center. If the lock sticks the first time, you may need to grab the door
handle and pull it towards you while you enter the code. If for any reason the
lock won't open (we've never had a problem with it), we do have a backup key.
Keep the code where you can find it so you don't get locked out! THIS AND THAT -
MISCELLANEOUS INFO – PRINT THIS OUT AND TAKE IT UP WITH YOU! The thermostat will
be turned on low when you get there. Let yourself in, crank on the heater
(thermostat is in the living room). It'll be cold, so I always flip on the oven
and the kitchen warms up quickly, plus there are little electric heaters around
the house. You can give it a kick start with the little heaters (it takes a
while to warm the cabin from 40 degrees up to 65!). During the day, you’ll be
most comfortable with the thermostat in the 65 – 68 degree range. At night, I
like to lower it to 58 – 60, because the down comforters are so cozy. There is
no curbside trash service in Big Bear. Please drop your trash off at the city
dumpsters on your way out (or if you're running into town for dinner). It's
easy... as you head in to town, make a right at Moonridge/Garstin, and in less
than a block you turn right into the city dumpster lot. Toss your trash in the
dumpsters, and off you go! You can accumulate trash bags in the garage, but
don't leave a bag of trash on the front porch overnight - the raccoons WILL rip
it open and make a nasty big mess. When we’re there, every time we head into
town, we grab any tied garbage bags in the garage and drop them off at the
dumpsters. When you arrive, put a green parking pass (we’ll leave them on the
piano or in the kitchen) on the dashboard in your garage. The City of Big Bear
patrols the neighborhood, and they don’t want to see more than 4 cars in the
driveway (no street parking) or more than 10 visitors. Our house sleeps 10 in
beds, plus there’s a sofa bed in the living room. We’re not particularly fond of
the City of Big Bear watching our house or our guests, but there’s not much we
can do about it. The city library is located just past the city dumpster lot on
Garstin. They have internet computers available in there, and my library card
number is 21483011443291 and the pin is 3503. any wood up... we have a gas log
set in the fireplace. Be careful when you light the gas, as it will POOF at you.
When you turn the fire off in the evening, please make sure the glass doors are
closed, because we don't want to heat the great outdoors. We don’t have a
scheduled snow plow service (because we don’t plow, unless we’re expecting
visitors). Our Big Bear manager will call for a snow plow if we have visitors
coming up and the driveway has more than 4 or 6” of snow. The spa in the
backyard is maintained by our Big Bear manager, so don’t be surprised if you see
an old guy messing around back there. The spa has 2 sets of locks (required by
the city). One set is 4 clips on the four corners, and there is a little black
clip key on a key chain near the front door (by the old radio). The second lock
is a combo lock, and it’s set to 423 or 4239 (I can’t remember, but Mark sets
the padlock so it matches the house number). If it’s really cold out, try to
keep the lid closed on the spa, because it will cool down quickly when it’s
open. If anything gets tricky with the spa, call Mark on his cell at
949-697-2246. I never touch it. We have at least 2 sets of sheets for every bed,
but this winter we’re trying something new - instead of making up the beds,
Carmen will leave king size clean sheets and towels in the master bedroom
closet, queen and twin sheets in the upstairs closet, and towels in the upstairs
bathroom. You can grab the flannel sheets or the regular sheets and make up your
beds. The bunk beds are tricky to make up, so you may choose to pop small
children in sleeping bags on the bunk beds. Weirdly, I had 4 sleeping bags last
winter, and now I only have 1. any jackets, boots, snow toys & sleds, etc., that
are there at the cabin are for you to use and enjoy. There's a foosball table
and a 6' pool table in the garage. The garage is finished, and stays fairly warm
(the heater is in there) but it’s mostly fit for teenagers, with a couple of
ratty old recliners in there. In the winter, if you have too much food for that
little fridge, it works really well to leave your extra milk and cold food in
the garage. There is cable television in the living room only. There are
televisions and VCR's or DVD players around the house. I have a BIG collection
of movies for you to enjoy, or Blockbuster is just over on Big Bear Blvd. in the
same parking lot as Stater Brothers. There's a fun dollar store in the Vons
shopping center too. When we want to get rid of the kids, we give them $5 and
send them off walking to the dollar store! A pretty place to go walking is on
the other side of the lake near the boat launch area. There are paths that curve
along the lake. From the house, go a block to Starvation Flats and turn right.
Starvation Flats changes names, but just continue along that road across the
lake, and turn left, then turn left into the boat launch parking.
WARNING! Even if you're a good cook, you might want to avoid baking. I've never
figured it out. Even a frozen lasagna bakes weird up there. I've learned (I've
tried cooking a turkey and frozen lasagna) to stick with something simple - like
spaghetti. If I want to serve a meatloaf or chicken or baked lasagna for dinner,
I cook it down the hill and just warm it up. Trust me, even refrigerator cookies
don’t work at 6000 feet. My kids love to pick up cheap pizza at the Little
Caesar's (I think it's $5 for a big cooked pizza) inside K-Mart. Last thing when
you leave, please turn the thermostat down to 40 degrees when you go... the
housekeeper may not come by for a few days and I hate to have the heater
running. Look for your things under beds, in closets, hanging behind doors... if
we find something of yours, we'll make sure we return it to you! And a favor! If
you could whip the sheet off the bed and start a load running the morning that
you leave, that will help Carmen get the house turned around for the next
visitors. HAVE A WONDERFUL RELAXING VACATION! Time goes slowly in Big Bear, so
kick the kids outside (or drop them off downtown for a double feature at the
movie theatre), crack open a book, fix a plate of cheese and fruit, pour a glass
of wine, and relax. Sincerely, Terri Linzmeier Select Homes Real Estate &
